A Family Classic

Grant invented this game with Eleanor when she was just a young toddler, and she has always loved it, begging him to do it again and again. He “staples” her to the wall and then removes the staples and catches her. He started doing it with Phaedra a few months ago, and she enjoys it just as much as Eleanor did. I don’t think I ever got a video of Grant stapling Eleanor, so I’m really glad I got one with him and Phaedra.

This is a picture of Grant stapling Eleanor when she was about 17 months old. Incidentally, she still asks her daddy to staple her, and he does it a few times before she gets too heavy for him. When she asks me to do it, I just have her stand against the wall. There is no way I could hold her up with one arm. I can barely hold Phaedra up like that!

First Week Back

We made it to the end.

This week has just been one of those weeks. We have been spoiled by having Grant home for the holidays without his evening classes. The term started this week, and Grant went back to three late nights a week. Phaedra came down with a cold on Tuesday. She had just gotten better from her cold she had at Christmas. It is so frustrating. I don’t know for a fact, but it feels as if the kids always get sick from church. Why can’t people keep their kids/themselves home from church when they are sick?

Monday, we had a Relief Society presidency meeting in the morning, and I took on a really big project for the week. I went home and quickly started feeling inadequate and overwhelmed.

Tuesday was rough on me. I managed okay Monday evening, but on the second night of doing dinner with the kids alone, with Phaedra whiny and clinging to me and Eleanor asking constant obvious questions and saying, “Mommy,” --just because, was wearing me thin. I didn’t want to ask my mom to come over because I didn’t want to add to her burden, but when she showed up unexpectedly, I burst out in tears. I felt like I was going to go crazy without adult interaction.

Wednesday was full of errands and another dinner alone with the kids. Phaedra only spends about two minutes in the high chair before she’s squawking at me at full volume to let her out. As soon as she’s out, she wants to be on my lap so she can grab at everything on the table. Book club was that night, but there was also an Elders Quorum meeting, so I took tired and cranky Phaedra to book club while Grant took Eleanor to the meeting. He was going to try to hurry and come pick up Phae and put kids to bed. Book club was awkward. I don’t think anyone particularly liked the book besides the person who suggested it, and I only hope I wasn’t too harsh about it. Plus, I always go away from group settings kicking myself because I talk too much. I wish I could learn to speak in moderation without interrupting people. Easier said than done. Grant’s meeting went late, so he wasn’t able to come get Phae, even when I stayed afterwards to be trained for my calling. We got the kids to bed late, and later that night, Phaedra ended up in our bed –the only way we could convince her to sleep with her stuffy, miserable nose. Grant and I hardly slept that night.

Yesterday, I was able to look forward to my photography class all day. I met Grant with the kids at Costco, where we ate dinner and swapped cars so he could take the kids home. The class was exciting. I am so thrilled to learn more. My teacher is new to teaching (his second term doing it), and it shows, but I think it will be really fun. I don’t remember the last time I had homework I was actually excited to do. We got out early since it was the first night, and I went home to do more work on the Relief Society project. Last night, Eleanor came down with Phaedra’s cold. So, the girls played ping-pong waking each other up. Eleanor could hardly breathe. Another night for Grant and me with hardly any sleep.

Today, Eleanor slept in (but Phaedra, of course, woke up early). We stayed in our jammies most of the day and had very low expectations for the whole day. Eleanor was enduring her first bad day with her cold, so she was feeling sorry for herself most of the day. She would constantly say, “Mommy, I’m sick,” in the same pitiful, I-need-sympathy voice I used to use with my mom when I was a sick kid. When I would gently tell her, “I know, sweetie.  I’m sorry,” she would tell me, “I don’t like being sick.” Poor girl.

It was a crazy week. I got the project done (my part, at least, but it looks like I might be asked to help with more). I think I just need more time to get adjusted to Grant being gone in the evenings again. I’m tired and hoping the girls sleep tonight. On the bright side, today was a colder day, and I managed to convince Grant to build us a fire. Plus, we were sitting here watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Grant paused the show, turned to me, and asked me if I’d like him to go pick up some hamburgers. We both agreed it’s been a long time since we did something spontaneous. How could a girl say no to an offer like that? Now, I’m sitting with my laptop and my fire, waiting for my knight in shining armor to return. The garage door made Phaedra stir in her sleep, and I’m hoping she doesn’t wake when he gets back. My, how life has changed since it was just the two of us.

We were hoping to go on a date tomorrow, but we’ll see if that will happen. I’ll have to clean the house before anyone can come here to watch the girls, and I haven’t had the energy to do it. I want to wait and see how miserable the girls are tomorrow. Plus, we have to see if either grandma will be healthy enough to watch them.

Phaedra

Phaedra is getting more and more difficult to photograph. She never stops moving. She really makes me work for it to get some decent pictures. There are fewer photos that turned out this month, but to me, her mother who melts at the sight of her, they are breathtaking. That makes it all worthwhile.

Phaedra is such a busy girl. She’s so busy learning, growing, and getting into trouble. She has so many new skills each day, I don’t know if I can remember to talk about all of them.

Her vocabulary has grown exponentially. She repeats everything. In the car, Eleanor asks, “Are we on the back roads?” and we quickly hear Phaedra echo, “back roads.” Here are some of the words she says (or says in a way we recognize), but I’m sure I’ll remember a ton more once I post this: drink, shoe, potty, cracker, snack, boot, out, teeth, uh-oh, drop, milk, Eleanor, eat, toast, food, more, hot, cold, light, dark, go, car, color, paper, book, sock, grandma/pa, baby, doggie, little mini, pretzel, apple, please, thank you, no-no, uh-uh, tickle-tickle, staple, nigh-night, nap, cow, bed, pillow, cozy, bird poop (echoing Eleanor), hand, bath, cookie, spoon.

She loves to dance and sing. She dances to any music she hears and tries to sing along whenever someone sings to her.

She is going through a real Mommy-clingy phase right now. She used to be pretty happy with most people, or if she was moody, she would be happy with either Daddy or Mommy. Lately, she just wants me. On mornings that Grant and I have wanted to sleep in, she wakes up and we put her in our bed. She hardly has a thing to do with Daddy, but she snuggles up to me, laying on my chest with her shoulder and head jammed tightly against my neck. I fell back to sleep with her on me like that one morning and dreamed someone was trying to strangle me.

She loves to push things around the house such as laundry baskets, toy strollers, and her new toy shopping cart. She also has hit the container phase; she loves boxes with lids that she can fill with things, empty, and fill again.

She finally got the last of her four bottom teeth just before Halloween (I think). For over a month now, she has been working on all four of her first set of molars at once. I think two (one top, one bottom, opposite sides) have cut through completely now. The other two are still working on it. I’m not sure if it’s the teething or just the stage she’s in right now, but she has been quick to throw a tantrum as of late. Some children, even Eleanor did for a while, go through a phase where they throw themselves backwards when they throw a tantrum, knocking their head on the floor to make you feel guilty because they aren’t just upset, they are now hurt also. Phaedra did that maybe all of two times before she realized it hurt, and it was a really dumb idea. She liked the effect it seemed to have on the adults, but she didn’t like the feeling. Ever since then, she gets angry, makes like she is going to throw herself back, and then slowly lowers herself to a lying down position. If that doesn’t work, she stays lying down and rolls around in anger. It can be quite comical. But hey, at least she’s smart enough not to hurt herself.

Phaedra has me so torn on the idea of another child. I have love, love, loved her as a baby (up to her current state- which I continue loving). Eleanor was a great baby; Phaedra was a great baby who actually learned to sleep! Things just got better with Phaedra. Plus, I wasn’t such a nervous wreck the second time around, so I could spend more time enjoying it. Things like that (and my girls’ baby pictures) make me so baby hungry I can hardly stand it. But, I am still having so much fun with the two of them right now that I don’t want anything to divert my attention away from them. I felt stretched thin after having Phaedra, trying to divide my attention between the two of them and hope I did a decent job communicating my love for both. I can’t imagine how that would be intensified by having three. Plus, the two so far have been rather good babies. Shouldn’t I quit while I’m ahead? But then I look at her adorable face again, and remember when she was a little baby in my arms . . . See what I mean? Torn. But for now, I’m sticking with not wanting to have to give up time/attention with the ones I’ve got. They are so fun right now. Another one can wait.

I’m tired, so I think that’s all I can come up with for now. Maybe I can keep in the habit of blogging regularly so I can update when I remember new things.

Resolutions: Reveal, Rinse, Repeat

I usually make a list (either mental or physical) of certain goals I want to work on during the year. Last year, I wrote down a list. I considered blogging it, but I decided it was too personal. After all, exposing my goals for improvement is like telling everyone where I feel the weak spots are in my life. This year, I started out by looking at last year’s goals I wrote down. While I did make some progress in areas, it all could still use a little work. So, I decided that I would stick with that list with just a few minor tweaks, and I’d post it on my blog so I might feel a bit more accountable. So here’s the big reveal:

(They are in no particular order, but I decided to number them.)

  1. Read scriptures regularly.
  2. Have family home evening regularly.
  3. Read more books.
  4. Do crafty projects that benefit our family. (I usually end up giving away so many things that I make, and projects for myself, my kids, or my home get put on the backburner. Ideally, I’d like to try to do one project a month, but that could be too ambitious.)
  5. Do crafts or learning activities with Eleanor.
  6. Family archiving or genealogy. (woohoo! blogging counts for personal history!)
  7. Keep the house clean and organized.
  8. Try new recipes.
  9. Use time wisely.
  10. Exercise.
  11. Go to bed early.
  12. Be pleasant and patient as often as possible.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go catch up on last year’s laundry ;)
