Mother’s Day: The Chicks

I had told Eleanor about the chicks before we got to my mother’s house, and she was really excited to hold them. The chicks are kept in the garage in a little pen with a warm light. There are actually 3 chicks, but one wasn’t doing so well, so we didn’t hold it. By Tuesday, the weaker chick was doing much better. Eleanor wasn’t nervous at all; she couldn’t wait to get one in her hands. We had to remind her not to hold the chick’s neck too tightly, but other than that, she did great. Phaedra watched with interest, but gave us a very decided “no” if we asked her if she wanted to hold or pet one. She eyed them warily when they were near her. She did finally reach out and touch one when I held it, but her curiosity didn’t motivate her to do more than that. Eleanor held one, then the other, and then asked to hold it again after she saw me hold it.
