Shiner #2

Poor Eleanor!
Sadly enough, this is not her first black eye. Her first was at least a few months ago when she decided she could lift my full water bottle off the coffee table. It was too heavy for her, and the weight of it pulled her down onto it, hitting her eye on the rim.

This time is a bit more of a blur. It was bedtime, so she was tired. She tripped, and I know she hit the coffee table and a toy car shape sorter-- the one Carter tried to steal at her birthday party. (Maybe if we had let him get away with it, she wouldn't have gotten hurt.) I'm not sure which of the two caused the shiner, but she wasn't happy. Last night, it looked like a little purple dent on the top of her cheek.

These pictures were taken this morning. She's sucking on a piece of ice in a washcloth. On top of her injury last night, this morning, Daddy accidentally bumped her head on the slight divider between our living room and kitchen while trying to put her up on his shoulders. That's why she has the ice. Whenever she gets hurt, we have to give her ice to suck on in order to get away with holding another piece of ice on the sore spot. Even then, she isn't so cooperative about having ice held to her head, face, or wherever.

The bumps and bruises are the least of our problems this week. We are sick; oh boy, are we ever sick. She was starting to show signs on Monday and got worse on Tuesday. I followed quickly after her, catching it on Tuesday. She has had such a hard time sleeping or napping because of her stuffy, runny nose. Now, it sounds like it's going into her chest. My nose just wouldn't quit today! My whole head feels stuffy and dopey, so I can imagine what Eleanor is going through.

As if we weren't miserable enough, Eleanor's molars are working on coming in. She's a really slow teether, so these molars have been causing her gums to swell (and causing us grief) for at least two weeks, maybe three. It feels like one side of one of the top molars is getting really close to the surface, hence her crankiness and irrationality (not that she is normally the most rational of creatures). She is so miserable, and there's only so much I can do for her. And, with the way her teeth work, that tooth might go back up so that any progress made today is lost. It could take another week or two before anything at all cuts through. The entire process of all four molars could take a few months, and that's an optimistic estimate!

  1. Ugh! Teething for some little ones is the worst! Of course it always seems there's someone with a child near your child's age that doesn't even seem bothered by them, like my sister-law's son. I know what you're going through though. We're going through the teething here too. Audrey, Nate, and I got that yucky cold/flu thing a month ago. It's the worst. Have you tried vaporub? It helps a little. For yourself (not Eleanor) Cold-Ez is great. Anyway, I hope you guys get well quickly!

  2. toddlerhood + independance + a little bit of klutziness = lots of bruises... and so much "fun" for mom and dad!
